History
Good Earth was started in 1979 as a roadside produce stand by Tom & Joyce Johannes. The stand was literally set up on bean baskets and plywood and was located in Olney on the grounds of the Olney Inn Restaurant. This is now where Sandy Spring Bank has their headquarters.
Tom & Joyce, with their two dogs, worked tirelessly to bring top quality produce to the small Olney Community. As the town grew, so did the business. They added flowers, plants, firewood and Christmas trees.
By 1987 they moved to their present location and we're a regional force in the retail produce and garden center business. In 1993 Tom's brother, Dave rejoined the team (he was Tom's first employee) with the goal to purchase the business from Tom and Joyce.
This goal became reality in 1995, as did air conditioning. In 1997, the Potomac retail store was opened carrying a larger supply of plants but no food. Landscape Design and installation was added in 1999. Now known for top quality colorful annuals, unique and hardy perennials, trees and shrubs as well as wonderful produce.
